Apple has yet again swept the nation off its feet with the unveiling of their latest models of the iPhone. The iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 plus were revealed on Wednesday September 10th, and is releasing for purchase today. Four million phones were preordered, which is double the number of preorders made on the iPhone 5. However, the sales aren’t the only thing that is bigger with this new model.
The screen size has increased more than an inch from the original iPhone model; the iPhone6 screen is 4.7 inches, while the 6 plus is 5.5 inches. These models are also considerably thinner than past iPhones. Data storage for these cutting-edge models has also increased with the options of 16g, 64g and 128g, whereas the iPhone 5 storage options were 16g, 32g and 64g.
The iPhone 6 is also said to be 50% more efficient, have 50% better graphics and also features a camera with optical visualization—meaning the lens of the camera can move to focus, rather than having the software focus as seen on the previous iPhone models. These two models can be purchased anywhere from $200-$400.
Along with the release of their new phones, Apple also released their latest software update on September 17th, IOS 8. IOS 8 is designed to work very well with application developers, giving them the ability to customize their keyboards and giving customers a way to use the touch identification tool in other applications. This new software fixes glitches in other areas of the phone as well.
“I am excited to get my hands on this new phone,” said Ben Boice, a Computer Information Systems (CIS) major. He anticipates receiving his new phone in the next few weeks. Boice is a big Apple advocate who says that “Windows don’t run as well as Macs do.” He explained that Mac has been providing their software on their own hardware devices for a long time now, while Windows has recently entered the game of selling hardware as well as software to their customers.
Apple’s long-standing experience gives them an up in this competition. Apple has also teamed up with big name business company IBM (International Business Machines) creating a new system known as Apple Money, which is a new means of digital banking and transaction.
Ben Boice believes that within the next seven years, Apple will have the type of technology to enable a phone that can charge without a cable hooking it to a power source. The iPhone 6 has the same power port as the model 5. But Boice anticipates the port to be a feature soon to be extinct from the iPhone altogether.
