Northwestern’s campus has a new sound. Men residing in Hospers Hall have teamed up to produce a radio show two to three times weekly, featuring music of all genres, trivia and interviews with professors.
Hospers Hottest, NW’s new “unofficial radio station,” has been operating out of a Hospers dorm room since September. The station was created as a fun side activity, but soon increased in popularity.
When Hospers Hottest first began, Lucas Heiberger — a DJ known as “The Wolfman” — had an interest in DJing and a friend had the equipment needed to make the dream of the station a reality.
“Isaac Clausen, a guy who lives on my floor, had a radio transmitter in his room, Heiberger said. “If you know Isaac, this isn’t surprising. So we hooked it up one night in September and broadcasted a show. The only people listening were the guys on our floor, but it was fun.”
Once reserved for the men of Hospers, Hospers Hottest began to branch out to reach the rest of campus the first week of this semester. With their jingles, music requests and game shows, Hospers Hottest now draws in a large crowd of NW students from all campus locations.
The station is a common topic of conversation and has helped to create a community that allows students to get to know other people on campus.
Currently, there are eight men involved in the production of Hospers Hottest. Though the producers don’t wish to conflict with Heemstra Radio and other forms of sharing music around campus, the men still wish to broadcast music in a fun way that the campus can enjoy.
DJ Heiberger enjoys being able to play requested music for people. As a child, Heiberger wanted to be a DJ and play music for others.
“When I was in fourth grade, I would go downstairs to try to play music for the friends my siblings would have over. It lasted for about five minutes, then I’d get kicked out,” Heiberger said.
Now that he is a DJ, Heiberger has the opportunity to live out his childhood dream. Among other things, Heiberger also enjoys the chance to interview professors for the show.
“I learn so many things about professors I didn’t know before,” Heiberger said, “It’s almost like another chapel to me when I interview professors.”
