The time to crown the singing champion of the greater Siouxland area is drawing near. For students at Northwestern and Dordt colleges, this means that it’s time for the annual NC/DC competition.
For those who are unfamiliar with NC/DC, think American Idol, but with better acts, funnier judges and much more at stake. The contest is open to any students who want to perform in front of their peers and think they have what it takes to win it all.
The process is fairly straightforward. There are three rounds, consisting of the preliminaries, semifinals, and finals. The competitors who advance through the first three stages will be chosen by student voting online that is open for up to a week.
Each performance, other than the original try-outs, will be open for students to attend. Students are encouraged to come support their peers, enjoy some talented acts and help decide who will advance.
Each college will host its own preliminary round, where students will decide on their favorite acts from their school. NW will host its preliminaries in Christ Chapel where students will select the top five acts to move on to the semifinals.
The semi-final round will take place at 9 p.m. on April 11, and will be hosted by Dordt in the BJ Haan Auditorium. It will feature the top five performers from the NW and Dordt preliminaries.
Here students will vote on their favorite two acts, who will move on to the final round.
The finals are scheduled for 9 p.m. April 18, and take place at 9 p.m. in the Bultman Center. The two selected competitors from each campus will perform songs, and students will vote that same evening for their favorite act.
The performers who do not advance from the semifinals will also get a chance to perform a song for the audience while voting for the winners occurs.
At the end of the night all of the votes will be tallied. A overall winner will receive a $500 cash prize.
The sign-up period for NC/DC is now open, and anyone with a solo, duet or group act is welcome to apply. A simple entry form has been emailed to all students, which needs to be filled out to secure an audition.
Potential performers will be scheduled for an audition timeslot on March 23-24, where acts will be chosen by the NC/DC committee which includes some Student Activities Council leadership members.
