Northwestern vs. Dordt: the classic rivalry. But things get more serious when you throw in a singing competition. Each year, NW and Dordt have a version of “American Idol” called NC/DC. This year there will be around 10-12 acts.
As the reigning champ last year, sophomore Abbey Slattery is back again with that musical talent of hers in a group with Will Norris, Lincoln Morris and Ben Patzlaff.
“The best part of NC/DC is interacting with the other performers, both NWC and Dordt students,” Slattery said. “Talking backstage, and then getting to watch each other perform, was a really neat experience. Plus, I always love the opportunity to make more friends, but especially more enemies.”
Slattery also said even if their group does not make it far, they will have a great time making music together.
Freshman Jenna Heemstra is excited to perform for the first time at NC/DC.
“I’m looking forward to being able to share my talent with everyone and just having a good time doing what I love,” Heemstra said.
Heemstra has been singing ever since she could talk and she has also been influenced by her mom, who sings as well. Heemstra is also in the women’s choir here at NW.
“I’ve also been doing talent competitions since I was little and always sang in school and church choir,” Heemstra said.
Brianna Zapata is on the Stage and Concerts Committee on Student Activities Committee and is in charge of running this year’s NC/DC.
“We want every group/solo artist to just get up on stage, sing their hearts out and most of all have fun,” Zapata said.
She also noted that after some disappointment in last year’s guest band at the finale, we will not be having a guest band this year.
Slattery also mentioned that it would be great if all of the audience members did not hold back on the applause.
“I think my favorite thing to see an audience do during a performance is respond to it by clapping, cheering, throwing roses onto the stage,” Slattery said. “All of those are great. It makes it feel like you’re doing something right on stage.”
Some advice Slattery has for the other contestants is to be confident in yourself while on stage.
“Just don’t eat too many cookies backstage before you go on,” Slattery said. “Tie your shoes. Be confident.”
NC/DC prelims will be 9 p.m. tonight in Christ Chapel. The semi-finals will also be at NW in the Chapel on Saturday, April 9, and the finals will be 9 p.m. in the BJ Haan Auditorium at Dordt on April 16.
