After receiving tough losses to Keiser and Haverford in Orlando, Fla., a month ago, the Red Raider women’s tennis team won its GPAC opener.
On April 2, the Red Raiders traveled to Omaha where they competed in two matches against University of Nebraska Omaha and College of Saint Mary’s. The competition between Northwestern and Saint Mary’s was a very competitive matchup, and the Red Raiders knew it would be. NW went on to win five out of nine matches.
“We knew it would be a good matchup; Saint Mary’s is much improved from last year,” said head coach Jeff Guthmiller. “After doubles play, we re-grouped to discuss that we could still win the matchup, the score was 1-2 and we were down. As you can see, the numbers were close each match. This was an important win to begin GPAC competition.”
The University of Nebraska-Omaha did not end as closely, as our lady Raiders did not win a single match.
“At the start of warmups it was clear that it could be a long afternoon, and that’s exactly what it was,” Guthmiller said. “Our ladies competed hard.”
The team’s most recent match against Midland University was postponed due to harsh weather. The team is aware and confident that they can compete with anyone in the GPAC. They must focus on themselves and minimize unforced errors. This can be achieved through this slight dead period. This time period is useful as the Red Raiders are allowed rest and recovery.
“In season, it is good to keep playing,” Guthmiller said. “Now we have ten days between match and then four matches in five days. Whatever the schedule, we look forward to it; this is a great group of young ladies and they give it everything always.”
While the date of the rescheduled Midland match is yet to be announced, NW is next scheduled to face Mount Marty on April 12 in Orange City.
