Last Tuesday both the Raider men’s and women’s soccer teams fell to the Morningside Mustangs.
The Lady Raiders traveled to Sioux City to face the Mustangs in their sixth conference game.
The Raiders played hard the first half, but Morningside still managed to score five goals. Despite the score, the Northwestern women played the “hardest 37 minutes of the season in the first half” according to the coaching staff.
Starting the second half at 0-5, the Raiders came out strong. However, the Mustangs put one more goal past NW’s keeper. Still striving to score on their opponents, the Raiders scored their first goal off of a direct kick by sophomore Krissy Hanson. The game finished 6-1.
The women haven’t given up. They continue to make progress through practice and are looking ahead to their game against Concordia College on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
The Raider men played two difficult games this past week but had two hard losses.
Last Saturday, the Raiders faced Hastings College in a match to take the number one spot in the GPAC conference.
Both teams were undefeated in the conference and were looking for a win.
In the first half, freshman Anthony Flood scored the first goal of the game with an assist by sophomore Scott Treft, leading the Raiders at a score of 1-0.
Moving into the second half, Hasting scored two goals, which gained them the lead 1-2. Though they continued to play hard and aggressive, the Raiders weren’t able to score again.
The second loss of the week came on Tuesday when the Raiders played Morningside College.
The Raiders put forth a hard fight but had a disappointing defeat with Morningside scoring two unanswered goals. Even though the Raiders didn’t score, freshman Mike Ten Clay had four saves out of the 13 goals attempted by Morningside.
The Raider men are currently ranked fifth in the GPAC.
The Raider men face Concordia College this Saturday in Seward, Neb., at 3:00 p.m. “We’re going to win, and definitely make it worthwhile. We’re not going to travel four hours to lose,” said Flood optimistically. Concordia is ranked seventh in the GPAC.
