It is no secret that Northwestern athletics has a history of excellence. A way that excellence is highlighted is through the American State Bank’s Student Athletes of the Week. Every Tuesday two student athletes are chosen to be the student athletes of the week.
The week of Sep. 10, the athletes of the week were Zavyr Metzger and Hayden Groos.
Metzger is a junior Raider on the volleyball team. She currently leads the country in blocks per set at 1.87. She also leads the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) in total blocks, and she sits third in blocks in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA).
Groos is a freshman quarterback on the football team, at his debut he threw 310 yards and had three touchdowns in three quarters on Sep. 14. He made 16 of 21 attempts and now stands at a quarterback rating (QBR) of 247.3.
On the week of Sep. 17, the athletes of the week were Anna Brant and Axton Miller.
Brant is a sophomore on the women’s golf team, she placed third at the Matthew Goette Classic. She also got a new personal record low of 85 from her previous record of 88. 5th out of 74 players, which is another big improvement compared to third out of 53 players.
Miller is a freshman on the men’s golf team, and won the Siouxland Invite last week, which was hosted at The Ridge in Sioux Center and Landsmeer Golf Clubs in Orange City.He finished the UC Ferguson Classic at 50th out of 79 players. From 50th to first out of 96 players is a huge improvement.
Raider excellence in athletics is sure to grow with freshmen and sophomores following in the footsteps of juniors and seniors
