Senior volleyball hitter Alysen Dexter and junior football lineman Jacob Dragstra have been named the Northwestern Raiders’ Athletes of the Week for their outstanding performances during competition.
Last week, Dexter increased her lead in the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) service aces per set, posted 23 kills and contributed significantly on the defensive end as well.
While Dexter is undoubtedly a force to be reckoned with herself, she made it clear that the volleyball team’s stellar season thus far has been the result of collaborative effort, taking things one step at a time.
“I would say a big part of our success is the endurance our team has developed to keep working hard and to give it our all in each and every practice, lift, and game,” Dexter said. “We also have a very close-knit team which has helped our chemistry on and off the court. We have confidence in one another and encourage each other with whatever we face.”
Dexter will be a player to keep an eye on as the team enters the postseason, where the Raiders will fight for a spot at nationals. The next game will be the GPAC quarterfinals against College of Saint Mary on November 8.
Jacob Dragstra had an impressive showing against Dakota Wesleyan on October 26, completing eight tackles, adding up to 18 overall this year. Three of his tackles were sacks and he also forced a fumble, his first time doing so this season.
Dragstra, a junior from Sioux Center, has enjoyed a successful career during his time at NW so far. Since his debut in the 2022 season, he has totaled 118 tackles and 15 sacks. His total of four sacks this year has him currently placed 13th overall in the GPAC. As the season continues, he should continue to prove his ability as a key factor in the Raider defense.
Although the NW football program has endured some uncharacteristic struggles in 2024, with a current record of 6-2, Dragstra’s stand-out performance on the field against Dakota Wesleyan demonstrates that the team still has the drive and talent to break through obstacles and display excellence.
Looking ahead on the schedule, the Raiders will face Dordt and Briar Cliff, the latter of which will be on home turf, before hitting the postseason.
