On Tuesday November fifth the election for the 47th United States president was held. The race was between democratic incumbent Vice President Kamala Harris and former president and republican nominee Donald Trump.
While many states have widespread mail-in and early voting the most consequential day of voting is on election day itself.
In 2020, due to Covid-19 restrictions the election results were delayed by several days, leading to many claims of election interference.
The American people were worried that a similar situation would occur this year with both sides dreading the stress of a days long counting process and Republicans fearing that there would be voter fraud similar to the alleged incidents in 2020. However, the American people were relieved of that stress when the election was called for Trump the same night, early in the morning on the 6th. The declared victory came first from Fox news with other outlets reporting the same shortly after.
President-elect Donald Trump decisively won the 2024 presidential election with 312 electoral votes: 42 more than the required 270 to win. Kamala Harris on the other hand only received 226 electoral votes. Trump’s victory was decided by nearly half a dozen important swing states which flipped for Trump from 2020 such as Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Michigan, Arizona and Nevada.
Another state of interest was Iowa, a historically red state which was projected to be red again this year. However, the Selzer poll showed Harris ahead just days before the election. Ultimately to the surprise of few Iowa did end up voting red, as usual, delivering 6 electoral votes to Trump. Trump also won the popular vote for the first time in his three presidential runs. Trump will become the second ever president to hold non-consecutive turns along with Grover Cleveland.
Trump’s victory comes after a difficult campaign for him as he was facing multiple indictments, assassination attempts and even a change of the democratic nominee mid-race.
Now president-elect Donald Trump gave a victory speech at around 2:30 am EST thanking his team, his family, the people who endorsed him and the American people for bringing him to victory. The same day at around 3:30 pm EST vice president Harris gave a concession speech urging her voters to remain steadfast in their beliefs and not be disheartened and assuring the country that herself and President Biden want a peaceful transfer of power. President-elect Trump and vice president-elect JD Vance will take office for Trump’s second presidential term in January of 2025.
