Unannounced, the rap group Fly.Union decided to part ways. Although the group is not together, they remain good friends and business partners. On April 8, 2016 the recording label The Greater Than Club, released Jerreau’s solo EP, Never How You Plan. The Columbus, Ohio native attacked this title throughout the project from various angles describing his faith in Christ, his love life, his family & friends and his constant attempt at a rap career in music.
The opening track, “Persevere,” is a great introduction to the project. Jerreau begins by describing events and time periods that were struggles in his life. He shares how he grew up in church with his father as a pastor, but how he still finds himself looking for God. Then he finishes with how he remained strong throughout these struggles, and who he hopes to be.
My favorite song would be “The Flow (Four Stories).” He shares his love life and past relationships. The song can get harsh, but respectfully and professionally, he doesn’t mention any names.
The song I disliked the most would have to be “All Night.” It sounds like a Drake track, and even though it’s good music, the Drake sound is what drew me away. “All Night” is what you would call a song for the ladies.
Jerreau’s music is simply soulful and inspiring. The biggest thing for me is his consistency. When the group started I would get dressed to their songs, and five years later I still do. He has message we can all relate to.
In my opinion, Jerreau is lyrically better than most songwriters, aside from Kendrick Lamar and J. Cole. But truthfully, for a debut album with little promotion this is very impressive. You can find it anywhere downloadable URL links online, Spotify, Apple Music and other stream services.
