“Moonfall” is a movie unlike anything else in this world and most people will agree with that statement. If you ask nearly any of the men in Hospers Hall, they will tell you that they have at least heard of the movie and the impact that it has caused. There are watch parties that happen with the movie multiple times a year and brings people together. Moonfall is by no means a good movie, but it is enjoyable when watching with other people. Critically, it has a 30% on Rotten Tomatoes but has a 70% score with audiences. This goes to show that it is a movie that is so bad that it becomes fun to watch. Tyler VanderLinden can be quoted as saying “It is one of the most peak Hospers events of the year and the standing ovation it received afterwards is a testament to how bad it is and how good of a time it is to watch”. As bad of a movie as it really is, the outstanding support for the movie, even going as far as having shirts made to celebrate the movie, cannot be overstated.
So, what is Moonfall even about? This is a question you may be asking yourself and I tell you, be patient, I am getting there. Moonfall is a movie about the moon… falling. But it is so much more than that. The story follows a former astronaut, Brian Harper, who witnessed an unexplainable disaster related to the moon in his past. The government is trying to cover it up, so he has to live with the loss of his friend from the mission. The only person who believes him is a conspiracy theorist named Dr. K.C. Houseman who has theories that the moon is a megastructure, a structure created by aliens, and is the first person to realize that the moon is out of orbit and is falling. The movie then takes the viewer through an action-packed story that takes place on Earth, in space, and even inside of the moon. You might even see appearances from Fuzz Aldrin, K.C. Houseman’s wonderful cat.
If you or a loved one are considering whether to watch Moonfall at some point, think about this quote from an anonymous person who has never seen the movie but knows from others that it is bad: “I know the men of Hospers like the movie so I might watch it for the kick of it”. You heard it here first, even somebody who knows the movie is bad would still be down to watch it. I have watched Moonfall ten times now and there are members in Hospers who have watched it up to nine times which shows that we cannot get enough of this movie. As bad of a movie as it is, I truly think that it is one of the most enjoyable experiences that I could have had. If this has not convinced you to watch Moonfall, look at some of the fan favorite quotes that come up in the movie: “Smells funny… Gravity” “Sonny drove fast away from the crazy water” “How many Brians do you think are inside the moon?” To conclude, Moonfall is the most enjoyable movie that I and many others have had the privilege to watch. I would recommend this movie to anybody, no matter who you are because it will be a time well spent.
