In a very tight affair, the Northwestern women’s soccer team was edged 1-0 by Morningside in Sioux City on Wednesday night, Oct. 26. Amy Grause of Morningside found the back of the net on a second half penalty kick with 13 minutes left for the game’s only goal.
The first half was a defensive battle as Morningside was able to muster up four shots compared to NW’s two shots. The game opened up a bit in the second half as the Raiders were out-shot 6-5. Northwestern was led in shots by senior Alissa Christoffer, junior Madison Bertman, and sophomore Madeline Swift with two apiece. Swift put both of her shots on target for the Raiders.
Naomi Schimmel made the start in goal for NW and tallied two saves on the evening. Niccole McGuire had three stops in goal for the Mustangs.
With the win, the Mustangs improve to 9-7-1 overall (6-3-1 in the GPAC). NW drops to 10-7 (6-3) on the season. The Raiders host #10 Hastings on Saturday in Orange City in their regular season finale. With a win, the Raiders could finish as high as second in the conference. A loss would see the Raiders drop to fifth place.
