The NBA Draft is coming and, unsurprisingly, I have an opinion. My top three prospects: (spoiler alert: Jimmer Fredette didn’t make it; he’s not Pete Maravich.)
1. Derrick Williams— Arizona. A 6’9 super athletic small forward whose jumpshot needs work, but has the tools to become a star in the pros…know who else could be described as such? Hint: his first name is LeBron and his last name rhymes with Shmames. Williams averaged 18 ppg and nine boards for the Wildcats as he brought them to the Elite Eight thanks to his late game heroics against Memphis and Texas in the Tourney.
2. Kyrie Irving—Duke. I’m hesitant to pick Irving, considering how little we saw him this year due to injury. He played in only 11 games, but showed flashes of brilliance. Examples: His 31 points in the victory over Michigan State early in the year, and the 28 points he dropped in the loss in the Sweet Sixteen to Arizona. But a healthy Irving destroyed opponents, and has been drawing comparisons to Chris Paul as a point guard. Sigh. Fiiiiine.
3. Kemba Walker— Connecticut. If Kemba were a character from a TV show, he would be John Locke from Lost, screaming “DON’T EVER TELL ME WHAT I CAN’T DO!” at everyone who doubted he could lead an exhausted Huskies team to the Big East Championship, let alone the NCAA national title game. His college stats (23.5 ppg, 1.9 steals) body composition (6 foot 1 inch, 170 pounds) and style of play are startlingly reminiscent of Allen Iverson, but Kemba is a more willing passer. Count. Me. In.
