The Northwestern Women’s basketball team took on the Mount Marty Lancers in a late-season GPAC match up on Wednesday, Feb. 8. It was a rough start for the Raiders, but NW came away with a 64-55 win over the visiting team.
The first quarter of the game was a close-scoring match between the two teams. Early errors by the Raiders kept the Lancers in the game. The Red Raider squad looked much stronger in the second quarter as they matched each point that the Lancers put up.
In the first half NW also lost high scorer sophomore Kassidy De Jong due to an injury, but she was able to make a return to the court in the second half. At halftime, NW was only leading by a slim margin of 38-36.
In the third quarter the women’s basketball team showed their real power behind. The Raider defense, as well as their offense, helped to outscore the Lancers 14-7, allowing the Raider squad to create a lead that would last for the rest of the game.
The strong play from the Raiders inside the paint lead to the victory over the Lancers at home. Scoring was spread across the roster as it was an all-team effort that led to the victory over the ninth-ranked GPAC team.
The high scorer of the game was freshman Anna Kiel with 16 points. The Red Raiders also kept the fouls to a minimum which stopped the Lancers from getting to the free-throw line and limited the chances for Mount Marty to close the scoring gap.
The win over Mount Marty ended a three-game losing streak for NW. The women’s basketball team is now 17-9 for the season (9-9 in GPAC play). The Raiders hope to continue this momentum into the weekend as they take on the Midland Vikings at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 11 in the Bultman Center.
