The Northwestern No. 15 NAIA women’s basketball team fell 60-73 in the conference opener against Doane on Tuesday, Nov. 11. The host Raiders drop to 2-1 overall.
NW struck first blood with a 12-4 run early on. But with nine minutes to go in the first half, Doane charged back with a 14-2 run of their own, giving the visiting team an 18-14 lead. Doane closed the half on a 12-6 run that gave them a 38-33 lead at halftime.
In the second half, Doane scored the first seven points to give them a 45-33 lead. The Tigers pulled away by 20 at one point, and although NW closed the gap at 13, it was too late for the home team.
“I think we are still learning a lot and need to continue to focus to get better every day,” said junior guard Morgan VanderSloot. “We need to stay confident and be aggressive. Our offense will be fueled by what we do on the defensive end and rebounding.”
Senior guard Karen Ettleman scored a game-high 22 points. VanderSloot added 11 points including going three for five from three-point. Senior guard Paige O’Neal grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.
The Raiders will look to rebound against No. 5 Hastings on Saturday, Nov. 15. The game will begin at 2 p.m.
