Senior outfielder Mitch Peschon took time to do a question and answer series during his experience spring break in Arizona with the baseball team.
Q: Best experience of the week?
A: Going down there, obviously, you’re there to play baseball. The most fun and the best times are when you get together with the team. You come back from winning games and you get to hang out in the pool. You get to run to the gas station with the team. That time together, whether its those types of things or playing games in the room. Just hanging out with each other is big as far as team chemistry and getting to know one another a little bit better while we are down there.
Q: Most memorable moment?
A: A big thing for us is when we get back, hitting up the pool and playing a little Sharks and Minnows. It sounds kind of stupid, but it’s a lot of fun getting all the guys in the pool and overtaking it.
Q: After these trips, do you see a difference when you come back? Is there more chemistry?
A: I think because we are down there for a week or a little more, you get to know the guys that you didn’t know so well before. You’re in hotel room with five other guys, so you are in close quarters with teammates you normally don’t interact much with. Fortunately, we have had a lot of success over the years going to Arizona, so the guys are usually a little more laid back and it’s more fun that way.
Q: What was the typical day like?
A: Thankfully, this year, we played a little bit later in the day so we didn’t have to wake up quite as early. We would wake up, eat breakfast, get dressed, head to the field for stretching and warmups and play the game. Then we would eat lunch and go out and get warmed up again for our second game. After that, we would get back to the hotel and hang out. Some people would go to the pool and others would just want to sleep because everyone’s pretty sleep deprived while we are down there. Then, we would go out for supper as a team, come back to the hotel and hangout again and watch movies in someone’s room. Then we would rest up for the next day and do it all again.
Q: Did everything go as expected as far as performance?
A: We ended up going 7-2, so that was nice. Obviously, we didn’t have the start to our season like we had wanted by going 0-8. So this was nice to get wins in the column. It would have been even better to win our final game, but I think the big thing was just getting wins and keeping that momentum going into the rest of our non-conference play and then into the GPAC schedule. Like I said, we’ve been fortunate that we’ve had a lot of success the past few seasons in Arizona. It just makes the entire experience better when we can have success.
