On September 6, 2025, the Fruited Plain was alive with music and cheer. Starting from four in the afternoon, the laughter and vibes only continued to energize until the sun disappeared behind the horizon. As night fell the fun had only just started. Until midnight, one after the other, different artists went on stage, sweating and singing and playing as the summer heat lingered. They were up on that stage sharing music and heart to a throng of enthusiastic parents, students, teachers, and every type of Northwestern Iowan. Whether you’re from here or not, it’s an experience worth having.
This establishment is fertile ground for community to flourish, which has only grown since its founding in 2010 by Laremy De Vries, the owner. If you’ve been around this part of the state for any amount of time, you have certainly heard about this famous spot. Its homey architecture, many rooms, books, art, and delicious food and drink make for a classic cozy place to study, eat, or simply be. The Fruited Plain since its beginning has been rooted in faith. Mr. De Vries is quoted concerning his establishment, “When I get to host a reunion of old friends over a glass of wine, I am reminded of the faithful, everlasting love God has for us.” The Dutch Calvinist Reformed tradition undergirds every aspect of life here in Northwest Iowa. Laremy De Vries himself is known to participate in theological discussion at Northwestern College. Dr. Jason Lief, a professor in the Biblical and Theological Studies department here, is well acquainted with Laremy De Vries, and invited him into one of his Calvinist lectures during the Spring semester last year. Reciprocally, Dr. Lief plays in a band with his son and they frequently grace the customers of The Fruited Plain. If you want to interact with a rich atmosphere of historical tradition and novelty, where ideas and relationships can grow, this is the place to be.
On their Facebook page, Pork N Bands made a small Calvinist joke concerning the “freewill donations” that are set up at every event. They alluded to the donations perhaps being predestined instead! Though it is simply a joke, it reveals a deep conviction of faith that has lasted for generations. While there are many Christian traditions scattered across the United States – and globe – Northwest Iowa is special. It is able to combine the ancient, deep history and belief with the modern outlets and expressions – art, music, worship, education, and the building of community are only a few ways we can tangibly experience the magic of this area. The Fruited Plain is a shining example of such a place.
Multiple events happen throughout the year at the sidebar of the coffeehouse. That night, however, the “Pork ‘N’ Bands” 9th annual music event took the spotlight. Many gathered that night to enjoy the nice weather (while it lasts), the jolly presence of friends, and of course the pork and the bands. Some of the bands featured included the Ruralists, the Girlists, Karma Macchiato, Freyas Revege, The Neverreacher, Christian Lief, and of course the FP House Band. This event is also a fundraiser for the Christian education program at Covenant Christ Reformed Church. A night of fun is in store every year for the citizens of this part of Iowa, if you missed it this year, make sure to mark your calendars for next time! Come and experience this wonderful place for yourself, and don’t be afraid to put yourself out there. Pork N Bands is an example of why you should say “yes!” to fun and random events nearby. Don’t miss out on the community. Know that when speaking with professors or fellow students, whether it’s an existential question about God, humanity, and the universe or simply a talk about the weather, no topic of discussion is off the table. So if you want to get acquainted with this part of Iowa, grab some friends and hang out at the Fruited Plain. It is certainly true to its name, bearing fruit for all to enjoy.
