On Oct. 2, 2024, Northwestern College hosted a mock interview night. The event was organized by the Compass Center for Career and Calling, which provides resources and advice to help students prepare for their future careers.
A crucial step in securing a job after graduation is mastering the job interview process. Mock Interview Night offered students a chance to experience what a job interview might entail, including potential questions, while also building their communication and networking skills.
In addition to the educational benefits, the event featured opportunities to win prizes and enjoy mocktails.
The event began with a brief presentation from the Compass Center, summarizing how the night would unfold and outlining what is typically expected in a professional interview. Students received a “passport,” listing goals for the evening, including “introduce yourself to a stranger,” “give someone a pitch of your career goals,” and “brainstorm five to seven stories you would like to tell about yourself.”
For each completed goal, students could enter a ticket into a drawing for prizes such as Beats headphones or an espresso machine. This tactic encouraged students to get to know others and complete their passport goals.
The atmosphere of Mock Interview Night was described as formal yet comfortable. The Compass Center emphasized that it was acceptable to make mistakes, as this event provided an opportunity to build confidence for real interviews.
Franken Fellows, students who work at the Compass Center, were also present to mentor participants and answer any questions. It was clear that the event was judgment-free, offering students peace of mind so they could perform well.
A key focus of the event was encouraging students to reflect on their personal experiences and the events that have shaped their character.
Many mock interview questions prompted students to identify qualities about themselves that could be exemplified through stories. Effectively expressing who you are is crucial in a job interview, as it’s important to demonstrate that you embody the characteristics you describe.
Mock Interview Night is an influential event on campus that all students should attend. It encourages participants to step out of their comfort zones, meet new people, and develop networking skills.
It also offers the opportunity to build confidence for future job interviews. It is a unique opportunity to experience a professional job interview without the added pressure.
The Compass Center is great at creating a comfortable environment for all students while making something that may seem scary, enjoyable.
