An unfortunate turn of events caused the Northwestern football team to change tactics for their away game at Doane on Sept 28th.
Instead of Quarterback Hayden Groos starting the game, it was Colby Duncan who stepped up and came away with another amazing victory.
Head Coach Matthew McCarty said that, “Unfortunately Hayden took a hit and hurt his throwing hand in practice late that week. We were unaware of the significance of it and if he would be able to grip and throw the ball until Saturday morning in warmups. We knew Colby would be prepared and ready to play and he did an outstanding job of leading our offense that day.”
This was evident and shown in NW’s victory against Doane 31-7.
This has been a transition year for the Raider Football team as a whole with their seasoned Quarterback, Jalyn Gramstad, transferring to the Nebraska Cornhuskers for his senior year.
The Raiders have had a great season so far with a score of four wins and only one loss.
Coach McCarty said, “Our young QBs have embraced the challenge. They have done a really nice job of stepping into a key role for our team and have hit the ground running. Both Hayden and Colby have done an excellent job. It is fun to see the growth not only week to week but also day to day. They have a lot of really good football ahead of them.”
The Raiders’ football team is no where near done, with so much to anticipate in the coming weeks: “our goal remains the same – pursuing our best. Each team is different from year to year. If we can attack each day with our best, we will put ourselves in position to compete for a GPAC championship at the end of the season and hopefully a deep post season run again. To do this our focus must be on the present and doing the work we need today to be at our best,” said coach McCarty.
