In the bustling realm of Northwestern’s athletic school spirit, one group stands out as the heartbeat of our enthusiasm: the Red Raider Athletic Band. With their infectious tunes and vibrant performances, they infuse the crowd and team with an undeniable energy. The Red Raider Athletic Band is a team of musically talented NW students who get to play fun music and have a great time at athletic events.
Noelle Ebert, member of the pep band for three years and mellophone player, first joined the band for the opportunities and experiences.
“I joined the band as a way to make more friends and play fun music,” Ebert said.
The athletic band is unique on campus due to the distinct music and performance atmosphere, which focuses on having fun and bringing enthusiasm to crowds.
While many of the musicians also play their instruments for other ensembles on campus, others choose to solely play for the athletic band. In fact, anyone is welcome to play an instrument for the band, regardless of talent.
Ebert comments, “…everyone in the band wants to be there and it creates a fun atmosphere to be part of.”
The athletic band’s heart and soul comes from the director, Steve Connell. As a retired band director for MOC-FV and longtime musician, Connell brings a passion for music and students.
“Steve Connell is a one-of-a-kind person. You can tell he is there because he loves and cares for the students,” one musician said, “He does and says some of the most out of pocket things and you never really know what he is going to do next.”
Connell’s love for students and the athletic band are evident, but his love for Christ is just as strong.
“Some of my favorite memories are from when Steve talks to us as a group after a practice or before a game. He prays for us a lot and you can tell that he truly cares about us as people not just as another instrument in the band,” said another musician.
