The Northwestern cheer team 2023 season started off with a bang. The team snatched fifth place in the GPAC preseason poll. Keeping a high status all season paid off for the team in the end.
Through competing in several invitationals and competitions, as well as cheering on the NWC football and basketball teams, the team had a run for their money. Though this is certainly true, they were able to pull through in the end. The team ended in 18th place as of now.
After talking to head coach, Taylor Decker, she expressed what their goals are for the coming seasons.
“Next year, we would like to improve tumbling and add more student athletes to our sideline team,” Decker expressed, “The team is currently sitting in 18th place in the NAIA. After next weekend we are hoping to be in the top 15!”
Even though they finished at a lower placement, the girls have expressed their excitement throughout the entire season.
“I have enjoyed doing team building activities and trying new group stunts during football season,” said freshman Yadira Ramirez, “I am looking forward to next year’s competition cheer season and next year’s football season.”
The team worked very hard throughout the whole season and even though they may not be where they want to be at the moment, they continue to strive through the rest of the season. You can find the cheer team cheering on several other teams around campus, even though most of them have lots of homework and jobs to do as well. They never fail to bring a smile to their audiences’ faces.
Next year, the team will be working just as hard, with hopes of moving higher up the totem pole. “But their main importance,” expressed coach Decker, “is that they do their jobs as cheerleaders for the glory of God.”
The cheerleaders have a busy year ahead of them, but as long as they keep pushing, it seems nothing can get in their way. The team will travel to York, Nebraska for their next meet on Feb. 10.
