The Northwestern baseball team traveled to sunny Tucson, Arizona ,for their Spring Break Tournament during the week of March 7th-13th. They accumulated five wins and two losses during the week with some impressive wins over #16 Jamestown and a 13-2 Mayville St. team.
Some key highlights from the week came from senior Isaac Horigan who picked up two wins in two starts and freshman sensation Alec Rickabaugh who also picked up two wins. The team also came back from a 0-10 deficit and won the game 26-16.
Head Coach Brian Wede felt that over the break, the team’s key to success came from their offense.
“The strength of our team so far has definitely been our offense,” Wede said. “We had five guys hit over .400 for the trip and average 11.7 runs per game on the trip.”
The Red Raiders also provided great service to the Tucson community with their work at a local elementary school. The team bonded by repainting the entire recess area with some bright and vivacious colors.
The Red Raiders played some high-level baseball over the Spring Break Tournament, and Coach Wede thought it was a valuable experience for his players.
“We got a chance to see a lot of different guys pitch and play, so hopefully guys’ roles start to become more defined,” Wede said. “We were also able to play a few JV games that allowed us to have everyone get some playing time on the trip, which was a great thing for all our players.”
The Red Raider Baseball team will travel this upcoming weekend, March 17-18th, to face off against #3 ranked Bellevue for a four-game set.
