Along with the baseball team, the Northwestern softball team also squared up against Bellevue University this week. The softball team competed in a four game set with the Bruins, featuring a double header at home and away.
Unfortunately, the softball team fared no better than the baseball team managed, and Bellevue swept the series 4-0.
Things kicked off in Bellevue, Nebraska where the Bruins hosted the first leg of the series. Despite the Bruins jumping to a 3-0 lead in the first game, the Red Raiders were able to tie the game back up at 3-3 in the top of the seventh inning.
Although things looked like they might stay even, Bellevue was able to clinch a 4-3 win with a run in the bottom of the seventh.
The Raiders were the first to score in their second game against Bellevue, with Kourtni Robinson scoring on an RBI by Laura Hurley in the top of the second. Despite grabbing the early lead, Northwestern was unable to add to their tally, and Bellevue was in control the rest of the game winning 7-1.
With two games down, Northwestern hosted the second double header of the weekend on Saturday, March 14.
The first game of the double header remained scoreless for the first inning, but in the top of the second Bellevue broke it wide open with a grand slam. Another solo home run saw the Bruins snag a 5-0 lead by the top of the third.
Things continued to get out of hand, with Bellevue scoring another grand slam in the fifth inning. The game was called in the sixth inning, with Bellevue recording a 10-0 win over the Raiders.
In the last game of the series, the Raiders failed to slow the Bruins down. Although they contained the Bruins to three runs, they were unable to capitalize on the other end, and only managed one run of their own.
This contest brought the Northwestern record to 7-11 on the season, as nonconference play draws to a close. The Raiders will begin their conference schedule this Saturday with a doubleheader at Nebraska Wesleyan.
