Congratulations! You are a college student at Northwestern, but you have not always been one. There was a time when you were a lost high school student trying to figure out what your future is going to look like. You may have pushed the memories of choosing a college into the back of your brain, but try TO think back to when you were choosing a college.
There are multiple elements that go into a perspective student deciding on which college to go to. Some examples include: wanting to go far away from home, playing a sport, attending a big campus or picking a school based on what you want to study. Exploring colleges can be frightening especially if you have no clue what you are looking forward to in a college.
Now think about what got you to decide to come to Northwestern. It could have been the small Christian college or athletics that got you to choose NW. The people to show you all the elements that Northwestern has to offer are the student ambassadors. There is a good chance that even if you don’t recall the person there to guide you through your first experience at Northwestern played a huge role in your decision. Their job is to help show perspective students what it means to be a Raider.
Other aspects of being an ambassador is being able to give students helpful types you wish someone gave to you when you were searching for colleges. Also being able to connect with prospective students and seeing their excitement for all new things. Becoming a student ambassador is an important and rewarding job. “You should become an ambassador because it’s so rewarding to see how you can make an impact on a student’s college decisions,” one student ambassador said
One of the best parts about being a student ambassador is seeing students go from walking around campus as prospective students to walking around campus as college students.
“My last prospective student showed me her audition for worship ensemble,” one student ambassador said. “She sung an entire song! That moment was so beautiful and such an amazing reminder that God has given us all different gifts to worship him with.”
Student ambassadors get a chance to connect with students who share the same interests as other musicians or athletes. They also get a chance to meet with prospective students who are interested in other activities. For example, an ambassador who is an athlete may have the opportunity to show the campus to someone who’s passion is art.
This gives the ambassador an opportunity to connect with someone and hear experiences from someone they wouldn’t get a chance to on a regular basis. Don’t worry about not being experienced enough to be a student ambassador. You will be trained and told how to be able to give prospective students an amazing first expression of Northwestern. If you are even slightly considering being a student ambassador, go for it. Make a difference in someone’s choice in picking a college and change a life. Another tip from someone who is a student ambassador is if you are someone who loves NWC and being excited about sharing this love with prospective students, become a student ambassador. Plus, you get paid.
