On Saturday November 2nd the students of Northwestern gathered in Ramaker for the beloved yearly tradition of the Threads pop-up thrift shop.
The Threads event is a fundraiser for IJM (International Justice Mission) which fights to end slavery, human trafficking and other human rights violations of people in poverty.
Students were encouraged to donate lightly used items of clothing by October 31st to stock the pop-up shop. Students donations were organized and set up to make the pop-up thrift shop possible again this year.
This year the event was held from 9:00 to noon on the second of November in the Ramaker building. The shop had a steady flow of customers throughout the morning. Customers looked through a variety of clothing options to find pieces that fit their style and size.
The event was a win for the customers who found new clothes, but especially for the women and children impacted by poverty, slavery, human trafficking and other problems that IJM fights against.
NW students shared their love for the Threads event. Many students explained how they were glad to know that their money was going to a good cause saying, “it’s great to know that my shopping is helping those in need” and “IJM’s mission is really meaningful to me”.
Students who donated clothing also expressed their joy in helping support IJM. IJM’s mission is making a real difference in the world. In 2023 alone IJM saved over 10,000 men, women and children from violence.
IJM also works with justice departments to better educate and equip them for these difficult cases and better protect their communities from violence. Students were pleased with the opportunities to find affordable clothing and support those that this event serves.
Students also offered up options to improve the event for next year. One student said, “I wish that the event lasted into the afternoon, so I didn’t have to wake up early to go”.
Another student, AJ Zinn, said, “I did not see much advertising and it did not click to go”. Zinn also said, “I wish I would have gone because I enjoyed it last year”.
The Threads pop-up thrift shop had another successful year of providing students with lightly used clothing and providing IJM with the money they need to continue fighting against the horrors that affect impoverished and vulnerable peoples around the globe.
