On Monday, March 17, Northwestern’s Vice President for Athletics Tony Hoops was named the Athletic Director of the Year by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA). In his two years at NW, he has already made lasting impacts both in and outside of athletic programs. Under his leadership, he has helped create the Student-Athlete Leadership Team (SALT) and the Raiders Giving Day. Both have helped to implement community and generosity within athletics.
“Mr. Hoops works hard to elevate our athletic department in many ways,” Head Baseball Coach Brian Wede said. “He has done a great job of fundraising and pushing our Raider Athletic Association/Raider Athletic Advancement Board forward, which directly impacts all of our programs in a positive way.”
Since coming to NW, Hoops has watched many teams make national championship appearances, bring home tournament wins, and claim national titles. When reflecting on his time, Hoops recalled some of his favorite memories that he has made so far.
“The Morningside snow football game in 2023 was the moment when I felt like NW was home and truly embraced by the community,” Hoops said.
NW has a well-developed athletic program, which means that there are many different teams and coaches to work with.
“Tony does an outstanding job of getting to know all of the coaches on staff and investing in them to help them grow,” Head Football Coach Matt McCarty said. Hoops’ clear communication and professional effort benefit the whole community of athletes, coaches and fans. There are many factors that come into play as an athletic director, and it requires dedication.
“The greatest leader ever was Jesus, so continued learning starts with being in the word and connected with our church,” Hoops said.
This strong, Christ-centered leadership has built a solid foundation for growth, strong reputations and new athletic heights. With consistent and passionate leaders like Hoops guiding Raider athletics, we can look forward to a bright future.
“Tony’s leadership will positively impact our programs because he cares deeply about our mission and vision here,” Wede said. “He desires to see the coaches honoring Christ through excellence in Athletics and he pushes us to always be bringing in solid people/athletes to our programs.” With so much success in just two years, it will be exciting to see what the future brings to Raider Athletics.

Tony Hoops has been a valued leader for NW Athletics.
