Northwestern College’s Red Raiders placed fifth in the Lila Frommelt classic, hosted by Briar Cliff in Sioux City, on Friday the 16th and Saturday the 17th.
At the end of day one the Raiders were sitting seventh as a team. During day two the women shot a team season best of 342 which jumped them up to the fifth position and a 36 hole total of 700 (358/342).
Topping off the team leader board was Morningside with 647, followed by Briar Cliff (661), Mount Marty (675) and Iowa Western Community College (677).
Freshman Chanda Zoomermaand was the top Raider of the tournament with a 26 hole score of 167, a career best, and tied for 10th place over all. Senior Courtney Hummel shot a season best of 81, placing her in a tie for 13th.
Sophomore Anna Perrenoud finished in 31st with 179 (90/89), followed by juniors Mikayla Christensen (T49-186) and Jamie Altena (T62nd-199).
When asked about the tournament, Hummel thought that overall the team performed very well.
“Two Rivers is a tough course that has a lot of trees, which we are not used to,” Hummel said. “There is certainly always room for improvement, but a fifth place finish is promising for us at the start of the season.”
Hummel is confident and eager for what the remainder of this season holds for the team.
“I am excited to see how we finish after the first half of the season and how we will progress as the season goes on,” Hummel said. “I know we are all capable of doing great things for this team so we will just have to see where we can go from here.”
As she reflected on her own game Hummel said, “There is always room for improvement no matter when you are playing or how well you do. I have been struggling to hit a straight ball this season, so coming back the next day and shooting a decent score was a good way to end the tournament.”
