The Red Raider underclassmen kicked off the season in Rochester, Minn. on Saturday, Nov. 6. Three Northwestern wrestlers placed in a tournament of 160 wrestlers from Minnesota, Iowa and Wisconsin.
Sophomore Jerod Flores was the top Raider finisher, placing third in the 149-pound weight class. Flores went 4-1 in the tournament, including wins by fall (1:10), major decision (17-7), default and finally a 12-9 decision in the third place match.
Sophomore Tyler Hatch went 3-3 to finish in 6th place at 133. He won twice by default and picked up a win by major decision, 10-2. Freshman Mark Evjen made his collegiate debut and also placed sixth for the Raiders at 157. He went 2-3 on the day with a win by decision (9-5) and a win by fall in 59 seconds.
Sophomore Angelo Quintana and freshman Ryan O’Kane went 1-2 at 125. Quintana had an 18-5 win by major decision, while O’Kane had a 7-3 win by decision.
Freshman JL Mayo went 1-2 at 141 with a win by fall in 2:05, while freshman Chris Michael went 1-2 at 184, winning a 4-2 decision.
The rest of the Raiders will begin the season at the DWU Open on Saturday, Nov. 13, in Mitchell, S.D.
