The Northwestern men’s soccer team suffered a tough 2-1 loss to GPAC rivals Morningside on Wednesday night, Oct. 26.
A quiet start to the game saw sophomore Tyler Limmer open the scoring for the Raiders in the 15th minute on a slick free kick following a foul by Morningside’s goalkeeper just outside the box. The foul earned Morningside’s goalkeeper a yellow card. NW held on to the lead and went into halftime ahead 1-0, and outshooting the Mustangs 3-1.
The second half started looking the same as NW tallied a few more shots but were unable to find the back of the net. For the first 70 minutes of the game, the Raiders easily had the better of the game, but were unable to add another goal to put the game away.
After a sustained period of pressure on the NW defense, Tom Karshuening of Morningside was able to take advantage of a fortunate bounce in the box and put it past sophomore Raider goalkeeper Matt Scott to tie the game in the 81st minute.
The Mustangs’ pressure continued, and Joao Soares was able to find the roof of the net in the 86th minute to give Morningside the lead. The Mustangs ended up outshooting the Raiders 11-4 in the second half, with a majority of their good chances coming after the 70th minute.
The win pushes Morningside’s record to 13-4-1 overall (5-4 GPAC), and sees them leap to fourth place in the GPAC. NW’s record drops to 7-10 overall (4-4 GPAC), and they fall to sixth place in the conference. The Raiders will close out their regular season against No. 2 Hastings this Saturday in Orange City.
