The NW men’s baseball team had a difficult week as they lost three out of four games. The Raiders played a doubleheader against Mount Marty and another against Concordia on April 10 and 11 respectively.
The first game against the Lancers started well as the Raiders gained a lead in the first two innings. However, Mount Marty pulled ahead in the third inning and maintained their momentum throughout the remainder of the game ultimately defeating NW 15-9. The second game was better for the Raiders, however. Mount Marty started ahead, gaining a one run lead in the first inning, however the Raiders caught up in the fourth inning brining the score to 2-1. The Raiders extended their lead in the sixth inning brining their score to five runs, while the Lancers stayed at one. The Lancers clawed their way back up in the seventh inning as they closed the gap to 5-4. However, the Raiders stayed sharp and shot the Lancers down finishing the game 5-4 for the win.
The Raiders did not fare as well against Concordia, losing both games in the Saturday doubleheader with scores of 4-1 and 4-2. The Raiders play next against Midland in Orange City on Apr. 16.
Softball also played two double headers last week against Briar Cliff and Concordia winning three games.
The first game against Briar Cliff kicked off with the Chargers getting a run, but their lead didn’t last through the first inning as NW led 3-1 by the inning’s end. The second inning widened the gap even further as the Chargers got one run and the Raiders got two. The Raiders played a dominant third and fourth inning shutting out the Chargers and getting 13 more runs bringing the score to 18-2. In the end the superior Raiders won with a final score of 18-3. The second game was a shutout against Briar Cliff. Neither team managed to get a run in the first two innings, but the Raiders made up for it and then some in the third with five runs. The Raiders kept the momentum up in the fourth scoring three more runs. The game wrapped up with the Raiders ahead 8-0, culminating in the best performance in a double-header by the Raiders this season.
The Raiders next played Concordia. The first game was a dull one as after the Bulldogs and the Raiders scored three and two runs respectively in the first inning, neither team got another run for four innings in a row. The Bulldogs got one more run in the sixth before the game ended with the Raiders losing 4-2. The second game started off poorly for the Raiders as they scored no runs in the first four innings while Concordia scored two. The Raiders found a groove starting in the fifth inning though, and scored two runs to Concordia’s one, bringing the score to 3-2. The Raiders scored three runs in the sixth inning and two more in the seventh, bringing their final total to seven. Concordia only scored one run per inning in the sixth and seventh, bringing their score to five, and giving the Raiders the win.
The Raiders play next against Hastings at home on Apr. 17.
