The Sodexo food service here at Northwestern is a great source of fine foods available daily to students, faculty and the public. As on-campus students, we are contractually obligated to be on a meal plan. Although some people may not take full advantage of their meal plans, junior Alison Schutt makes sure she feasts everytime the caf or Hub @ N-Dub opens their doors.
Schutt uses the Choose to Reuse mugs as well as the To-Go containers to her advantage at the caf. “When I know I have unused meals, I use my To-Go box to get foods to keep around my apartment,” Schutt said. “You can get a whole week of Warm Cookie Wednesdays if you use your box right.”
The To-Go containers and the mugs are relatively new ideas at NW which are helpful for students that do not have time to sit down for a full meal at the caf, or simply want to take food with them.
“I wanted to present the option for students to take a hot meal to go, rather than just the sandwiches and salads that we offered,” NW Sodexo General Manager Ned Price said.
As college students, many of us are hungry all of the time. The To-Go containers also provide a means of stashing away some extra snacks to eat later in the day. You can take vegetables, bagels, cereal or any other food in the caf to provide some fuel for late night antics.
The caf is a great place to eat when you are feeling famished, as it provides the only “all you care to eat” service on campus. However, if you are craving a burrito, burger or a new and sometimes rare pizetta (more commonly known as a flatbread pizza), the Hub is the place for you.
There are also a few ways to take food from the Hub for later. Chips and juice are great sides to grab, as they can be saved for later and sandwiches will keep in your fridge, provided you keep off the condiments and vegetables containing considerable moisture.
Another hack is the underappreciated onion ring. When choosing the perfect side to a chicken sandwich or Raider Burger, you have the option of choosing freshness. “Any time you order onion rings, they are made fresh,” junior Hannah Garbison said.
Whether you choose to frequent the caf or spend all of your meal exchanges at the Hub, make sure to get the most of what you pay for. Understand your meal plan, that way you can use all of your meals and flex to their highest potential. Whether that means snagging some warm cookies in your To-Go container for later or using your flex on some hot onion rings, find out how the incredible dining services here at NW can control your undergraduate hunger.
