The Raider wrestling team is off to a stellar start this season, boasting an impressive 4-1 record. With growth, grit and a clear sense of purpose, the team has shown they are ready to compete. Their photographer and videographer Julian Palma, who has closely followed the team’s journey, shared some insights into their remarkable progress this year.
“The team’s overall performance has been nothing short of exceptional. They have shown tremendous growth, from the start of the season to winter break and returning after the winter camp,” said Palma. “The dedication they have displayed, individually and as a team, has been inspiring.” The wrestlers’ passion for the sport has been evident in each match, with a consistent drive to improve and succeed throughout the season.
Several standout athletes have emerged this season, including Noah Parmelee and Kaleb Lind, who have been nationally ranked at various points throughout the year. However, it is not just individual success that stands out. Some first-year wrestlers have also made great strides, like Kaleb Grove, and the team as a whole has improved significantly. They have been competing at a high level against teams in and out of state.
The training regimen for the team is intense and well-balanced. On a typical week, wrestlers focus on both technique and conditioning. Practice structure is based on the time before a competition. If they are close to a match, they will emphasize drilling and technique. Head coach Rik Dahl also puts a big emphasis in mental preparation, utilizing motivational speeches to inspire the team to keep pushing no matter what. The team’s commitment to improving by 1% every day is a core value that has kept them focused and driven.
As the season progresses, the team remains focused on their goals and continues to build on their impressive start. With a blend of strong leadership, a dedicated coaching staff and a tight-knit group of wrestlers, the team is poised for even greater success in the months to come. Looking ahead, the team’s goal is clear: to qualify as many wrestlers as possible for the national tournament.
“The ultimate aim is to win the national championship, but every wrestler has individual goals,” Palma shared. “The common goal, though, is to make it to nationals.”
As the grind of the season continues, the Raiders have plenty of highlights behind them to encourage and motivate them moving forward.
