Over eight million high schoolers participate in sports every year, but the athletic transition to college is tricky. The stress of a new coach and team and the added pressure of playing at a higher level can be a lot for an incoming freshman. Though they may have a love for their sport, many athletes do not continue pursuing athletics in college. However, this does not mean they have to say goodbye to their sports career forever. Intramurals offer a great space for people of all experience levels to compete and practice the sports they love without the extra pressure and large time commitment.
With the new semester, several winter intramural sports are now in full swing. Men’s 5-v-5 basketball, women’s 3-v-3 basketball, singles pool, singles ping pong and indoor golf are currently underway. Within these sports students can name their own teams and create a roster filled with their friends.
“My favorite part of intramurals is the opportunity to have healthy competition with peers and friends,” senior Andrew Quinlin said. “We are able to push each other athletically and in our faith journey.”
Though no more teams can be registered at this time, it is not too late to join an existing team. If you prefer a spot on the sidelines, you may want to consider becoming an intramural referee. Intramural referees still get game experience but will not have to deal with upsetting a rival school, maybe only a rival group of friends.
Be on the lookout for new intramurals as the semester progresses and consider creating or joining a team. These opportunities are easy ways to beat the winter blues. Whether you are an athlete in the off-season, enjoy playing sports without high-stakes stress or just like being active with friends, intramurals are a great opportunity for everyone across campus.
