Did you know that dragons love tacos? In NWC’s upcoming production of “Dragon’s Love Tacos”, a boy and his dog soon come upon this newfound knowledge while learning about “Dragonology” by simply watching a TV show about dragons. Northwestern’s production is directed by Ethan Koerner and is based off the children’s book by Adam Rubin. It’s full of adventure, whimsy, and of course, LOTS of tacos.
The theatre department at Northwestern has been hard at work preparing for this year’s children’s show to open on Homecoming weekend. They will have put together a production in just six short weeks by the first performance on October 2nd. That’s not a lot of time!
The production crew of this show has been meeting weekly as a large group with many smaller meetings in between to put together all the behind the scenes of this show. Each of these designers in the production crew has a crew behind them as well to help bring their designs to life! For example, Rae Outland, the props designer, and her crew have been tasked, among much else, with the tedious task of making many, many, MANY tacos. Dragons do really love tacos.
Highlighting another area, Lexi Squier – scenic designer – and her team have the challenging task of crafting the child’s house. The production will be set in the round, meaning that the audience will be on all four sides of the stage, and will truly be welcomed into the house.
Raquel Yoder – costume designer – and her team have been creating each character’s outfit to match their personality. Every dragon in this show has a unique sense of style that sets them apart from each other. The sound designer, AJ Zinn, has added to this by giving each dragon their own entrance music. There will be lots of fun music and silly noises with plenty of crazy dragons to go along with it.
Anna Frangenberg has been hard at work creating, in her own words, “lots of silly goofy lighting for a silly goofy show.” The light crew has already finished hanging all the lights for the show and will begin focusing all the lights this coming weekend.
The cast, along with their stage manager and assistant stage manager, have been putting in lots of time preparing for this show as well. With five days of rehearsals each week, some days with multiple rehearsals, the cast has been memorizing, practicing, and owning their characters. Some dragons are a little sassy while some may be more shy. All in all, they’re a super fun bunch!
The dramaturg, Rhea Cutler, has sent out “Dragon’s Love Tacos” related activities to all the children that are going to come to the show along with working on getting tacos for the opening weekend performances.
There is much more this show has to offer that these amazing people have been working on. It seems like a lot, but as a character in the show states, “Always believe that with a little drive and determination, amazing things can happen.”
To find out more, come to the show on either October 3 at 7pm and October 4 at 4pm!
