The NW soccer regular season has wrapped up as fall sports enter their post-season. The men’s and women’s teams both ended their regular seasons with games against the Dordt Defenders.
The women’s team took home a loss as Dordt managed to pull ahead by a goal in the 89th minute. The game ended with a final score of 2-3 and was the last game of the year for the women’s team.
The women’s coach, Vitor Pereira still took pride in the season saying “This season was a good building season for us. Considering all the changes that happened, short squad, and injuries, achieving the best winning record since 2019 was an indication that we are in the right path. Looking forward the next season!” The women’s team ended this season with an overall record of 7-8-2.
The men’s team, on the other hand, took home a definitive 3-1 victory in their away game against Dordt. This win secured the GPAC championship trophy for NW at the end of their regular season.
The men’s team advanced to the GPAC quarterfinals in the postseason playing with commanding defense in their first showing: A home game against Mount Marty. This game represented goalkeeper Edoardo Allesandrini’s 8th shutout of the season. Unfortunately, NW’s opponent Mount Marty also put up a stellar defensive performance to finish the game with a score of 0-0 and ending NW’s post-season run. This represented the first time NW has not beaten Mount Marty, bringing NW’s record against the team to a total of 27 wins, 0 losses, and 1 tie.
Head Coach Daniel Swier expressed his disappointment with such a swift end to the post-season as well as his pride in the team’s performance during the year. He said “Although our season did not end the way we would have liked, take nothing away from the accomplishment of this team. Winning a GPAC title is an incredible achievement, and I could not be more proud of this group for the way they came together earn this trophy”. The men’s team finished out the year with a final record of 13-2-3, with their only losses being to Graceland and Hastings. This represents the fewest losses in a season since the team was formed in 1995.
