“Regretting You” was released to theaters on Friday, Oct. 24 and has already taken the world by storm. This movie is based on the book by Colleen Hoover in 2019, and stars actors Allison Williams, Dave Franco, Mckenna Grace and Mason Thames. The way that director, Josh Boone, brought this story to life has left audiences awestruck. From emotionally filled scenes and strained family relationships, this movie can be captivating to the right audience. Even though some audiences are saying it is a disappointment, this movie is something that can certainly satisfy and entertain romance and drama lovers.
“Regretting You” centers around the family dynamic of Morgan Grant and her daughter Clara, as well as Morgan’s husband Chris, her sister Jenny, her childhood friend and Jenny’s partner, Jonah, one of Clara’s school friends and crush, Miller Adams. Their family life is overall filled with happiness and joy in the beginning, but things take a turn when an accident leads to the sudden death of Chris and Jenny. Due to this horrific accident, secrets that have been hidden for years are revealed, and this once close-knit family is falling apart. The story continues through the next couple months – everyone must cope with the loss while finding new love and relationships.
Watching “Regretting You” from a young Christian perspective causes one to pick out certain details in this movie over others while thinking about how it relates to today’s society. The movie is rated PG-13 for a reason, as it dives into topics of affairs, sexual content, teen drug and alcohol, and some strong language. These are not topics that are always wanted to be seen, but help drive the plot of the movie forward. Besides, the audience is able to see how flawed and human the characters are. There are certainly scenes that are shown in the movie that one could argue are not worth being part of the story, but that is simply not the case. Going through a time of grief causes people to not always think all the way through their actions, and their emotions are high and are easily triggered, hence the winding plot.
Other vulnerable topics that this movie visits are the regrets that people may have about their past and that they do not want to have any more in the future. In both of their new coming relationships, Morgan and Clara have to decide what they truly want. They both have regrets when it comes to their relationships with Chris and Jenny, and it takes time for both to move on. Morgan must face the possible regrets about who she ended up with and what that does to her, but she doesn’t regret having Clara at a young age. She struggled with the chance of regretting not taking another chance. Clara is trying to figure out what she wants her future to be like and who she wants to be surrounded by. Ultimately she is nervous about what she has to decide.
“Regretting You” is a movie that dives into the tough topics of relationships that most people don’t want to fathom or have to deal with. This movie takes care of these areas with care, respect, and the right level of sensitivity. It shows how these characters’ feelings are real and valid, even though they are messy. The challenges that they have to face are some of their worst fears, and the way that each actor embodied their journey made the story come to life in a thought-provoking way. This movie would be rated a 4.5 out of 5 stars, the only reason that it loses .5 stars being the small intense intimate scenes were not the favorite to watch, and even though they were part of the plot, they may not have been needed to be seen in the length that they were.
