NW girl’s basketball season is off to a terrific start, with three consecutive wins during the week of Nov. 3-10. The week started off on the fourth in La Crosse, WI, against the Viterbo University V-Hawks. The Raiders scored a 74-63 point victory, with four players scoring in the double digits by the end of the game. The game also marked the return of Head Coach Chris Yaw after a four year hiatus. NW is excited to see Coach Yaw back on the sidelines.
The girls were back on the court on the seventh against John Brown University at the Bultman Center for the first game of the Pizza Ranch Classic. The Raiders secured a win against the Golden Eagles in an overtime battle resulting in a score of 78-74.
Saturday the eighth hosted a ferocious battle against the Grand View University Vikings for the second game of the Pizza Ranch Classic. Ashtyn Wobig led the team, scoring 25 points throughout the game. The Raiders defended their streak with grit and intensity, resulting in a score of 83-72.
The energy on Saturday was palpable. “The energy in the Bultman was high the entire game.” Daniel Minks said, “Every basket and every defensive stop led to instant cheers and students on their feet. You could tell it led to high intensity on the court as well.”
NW Men’s Basketball team also secured a victory this week against the V-Hawks of Viterbo University. The game took place in the Bultman Center on Saturday. Jalen Langsy led the Raiders with 29 points, as well as shooting 5 for 5 on the free throw line. As a team, the Raiders went 15-27 beyond the arc and 18-23 from the free three line.
“I really thought the game went as we planned and what we practiced for,” said Blake Aalbers. “We did what we needed to do to win, and that was on the defensive end. Jalen [Langsy] played great and dictated the floor on the offensive side, and we played a great team defense all game long. Something I was proud of was how even when the other team went on some runs, we always stayed level-headed and had a response. That’s what great teams do.”
Both the girls and boys basketball teams showed extreme grit and power on the court. This season is sure to be an exciting one.
