Sophomore Kamea Van Kalsbeek goes for a layup against the Warriors.
The NW men’s basketball team had a light week playing only one game against Morningside at home.
The men’s team started out strong pulling ahead by nearly 20 points in the first half, with a halftime score of 53-35. The Raiders continued to steamroll their way past the Mustangs in the second half as they put up another 56 points to bring their final total to 109. Morningside also shot well in the second half putting 50 points on the board, but it wasn’t enough to beat out the Raiders in the game or even just the second half.
The Raiders fell just shy of matching the school record for the most three pointers in a single game, set in the 2016-17 season. The record is 22 and the Raiders made 21, accounting for nearly two thirds of NW’s final score. This game also evened out the game history between Morningside and NW as this was NW’s 24th win against the team, tying Morningside’s 24 wins against NW. The teams are more evenly matched in that both have 15 wins on their home court to only nine in away games.
The women’s team had more to do than the men this week playing Morningside as well as College of Saint Mary.
The first half saw the Raiders pull ahead by 4 points with a halftime score of 27-20. The Raiders put even more pressure on the Mustangs in the third quarter as they doubled their score with 27 more points. The fourth quarter was less intense, but the Raiders kept comfortably ahead of Morningside finishing the game with a 12-point lead and a final score of 71-59. A key player in NW’s offense was Ashtyn Wobig who scored 24 points, over a third of the team’s total. The game also brought the team to number six in the conference with a two-game lead over the number seven team.
The game against the College of Saint Mary Flames was one of the most definitive wins of the season for the team. NW outscored the Flames in every quarter by a margin of six points at their lowest and a triumphant 19 at their highest. The game was a complete blowout as NW won by almost forty points with a final score of 98-59.
Following these games, the teams only have two more outings in the regular season, against Waldorf and Dakota Wesleyan, before the GPAC tournament begins.
