Does this frigid weather have you feeling blue? Don’t your time watching mind numbing hours of television and harvesting crops on Facebook. Here’s a list of things that you can do to escape the cabin fever before rigor mortis sets in.
If you enjoy the snow, be sure to check out the random snow forts built on the green and in front of Heemstra. You can also go skiing or snow tubing for a reasonable price at Plymouth County Conservation in Hinton (a mere 30 miles south of Orange City). Don’t forget ice skating! The IBP Ice Center in Sioux City allows for public ice times on Friday and Saturday evenings. If none of these things interest you, do my personal favorite activity. Grab a cardboard box and find hill steep enough to carry you to the bottom.
More of indoors person? Main Street Theatres in Orange City and Sioux Center have a great line up of movies playing every day. If you are a country music fan, check out the concert listings at the Tyson Events Center in Sioux City. Want to try something new? Drive on over to the DANCE Ballroom & Studio in Sioux Falls to try their free community dancing lessons including country, swing, ballroom, and Latin. Or make use of our wonderful library and curl up with a good book.
If you are looking do something constructive on a weekend, keep in mind the many volunteer opportunities in the area. One example of this is Hope Haven in Rock Valley. Check out their website for a list of things that you can do to help the residents there. You can also read to children in the local public library or organize a fundraiser to help provide relief to the people of Haiti facing the aftermath of the recent disaster.
Of course, there are always good, old fashioned games. Get some friends together and play Apples to Apples, Catch Phrase, or Rummy. See if you can get everyone in your wing to turn the lights down and play Sardines or Hide and Seek. Grab your iPod and start a random dance party. Walk over to Hospers and organize a game of 4-Square, play a game of Chess in West, or check out the rumored epic Nerf wars in the basement of Colenbrander Hall.
