Who knew a film released exclusively on Hulu would be one of the most subversive, chilling and creative sci-fi horror features in recent memory? Well, that’s what we get in the form of Hulu’s latest original film titled “No One Will Save You.” This film subverts any and every expectation you might have going into watching it.
For example, the plot entirely focuses on one central character, named Brynn, portrayed brilliantly by Kaitlyn Dever, and never takes focus off of her for the entirety of its runtime. Furthermore, in a move that has proven to be rather divisive amongst general audiences, the film has practically no spoken dialogue whatsoever.
The story is told completely through physical action sequences combined with a masterclass in facial acting by Kaitlyn Dever and a sense of high tension that holds on for the whole film and builds up to an edge-of-your-seat level of intrigue that never lets go for even a second. It may sound rather boring that a film has nothing to talk about in the form of spoken dialogue, but it is important to acknowledge that just even though the characters are not speaking words, the filmmakers still manage to prove that they have a nuanced and compelling story to tell. The effectiveness of silence speaks volumes all on its own when it comes to its effectiveness in this film.
The film centers around a young woman named Brynn who appears to be somewhat of a social outcast in her small town. She lives in her late parents’ house, which is incredibly outdated and vintage in its furnishings. For example, there’s a rotary phone that Brynn regularly uses, despite the film being set in what appears to be the present day.
Between Dever’s intricately chosen facial expressions and the film’s strong writing, we are able to get a clear initial impression of who this character is within the context of her current situation. The writing proves itself to be even stronger as the film continues and, despite no words being spoken, we are able to see the nuances and layers of this woman’s true character and role in the plot peel themselves away gradually and distinctly, thus keeping us on our toes throughout as to who this woman really is and how she ended up in the situation that the film sets her in.
Another important thing to note about this film is that it is an alien abduction film. That fact alone might turn some people off wanting to watch it, but as someone who is not normally a fan of alien movies, I can say that that fact should not stop you from considering checking this movie out. This film completely subverts the cliches of the genre in such creative ways that can only be truly expressed once you’ve seen the film. Also, if you’re not a huge fan of the stereotypical gore and gruesome violence that comes with horror films, that shouldn’t be an issue with this film either. Of course, there are jump scares and plenty of physical violence, but there is no blood and the violence is mild in terms of how disturbing its portrayal is on-screen.
Overall, “No One Will Save You” is a captivating and utterly chilling sci-fi flick with a strong build-up of tension and thrill that more than pays off. It’s also a movie that will really make you think long and hard about what exactly the message of the movie is. It is definitely a movie that those who are looking for a film that requires close, undivided attention and an appreciation for nuanced and thought-provoking storytelling should see. Plus, another perk is that it’s readily available right now to stream on Hulu, so if you’re looking for a thrilling and captivating spooky season movie, look no further than this one right here.
