Emma Blum and David Bomgaars were named the American State Bank Student-Athletes of the Week. It is decided based on athletic performance in sports. Both were humbled and proud of this achievement.
“When I first realized Northwestern College honors two student-athletes each week, I made it my goal to work toward this honor,” said Blum, “I didn’t think I would get it so early in my athletic career, but here I am. God has blessed me so much with this achievement.”
Blum has always strived to get good grades, and her passion for track and field led her to work even harder both on the track and in the weight room.
She believes that without God this achievement would not have been possible.
As a sophomore sprinter on the women’s track and field team, she shows incredible promise. This is reflected in her athletic statistics, at the meet on Feb. 3, she won first place in the 200- and 400-meter runs. Her team for the 4×400 relay is also doing very well, placing above tenth consistently.
We can expect great things from her in the coming seasons and at the Raider meet in the Great Plains Athletic Conference Indoor Championships at Mount Marty on Feb. 16 and 17.
With the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Indoor Championships on Feb. 29 through March 2, we can also expect great things from her and the rest of the talented team.
Bomgaars said, “I don’t work toward any achievement on the court besides winning. I find focusing on anything else gives me too much to think about, so I focus on helping my team by doing what I can to win.”
Bomgaars is also being steadily consistent as a junior on the men’s tennis team. At the Feb. 3 meet, he went 2-0 in both singles and doubles. In the singles match against Federico Polidori, he won his matches with 6-1 points. In doubles with his partner Jorge Menendez, he also won with 8-7. This was a close match but was slightly in the Raider’s favor. We can expect great things from him at the Raider’s next meet at Augustana University on Feb. 16.
