Friday night started off well for the Raiders when Madison Bertman scored in the first 10 minutes of the game. Bertman put in a great individual effort with two goals of her own. The goals kept coming as Jessi Carver hammered one home for a close-range finish after Tati Garcia gave her a touch pass. The goal in the 35th minute was Carver’s first of the season.
The Raiders finished off the half with a goal in the 44th minute. The goal was scored by Tati Garcia, and Nikki Farnsworth was credited with the assist. The goal and assist were both the first for each Red Raider woman.
Bertman struck again and netted her second goal in the 55th minute of the second half. After finding the ball at the right side of the goal at the top of the box, Bertman took two big touches which led her to the center of the frame and a great finish in the top corner of the goal. The Raiders won 4-0 and continued Naomi Schimmel’s shutout streak.
The women returned to action Saturday night in a game against Viterbo. The Raiders again were on the board in the first 10 minutes. Bertman streaked down the right side and was able to cut back on her defender and take a strike that found its way into the back of the net. This was Madison’s fourth goal of the season.
However, the V-Hawks tied the score in the 29th minute. Nicole D’Ambrose capitalized on the bouncing ball in the box and tapped in the equalizer. The goal saw the end of a 305 minute shutout streak by the Raiders and goalkeeper Naomi Schimmel. This was the second longest streak in program history. The rest of the match saw multiple chances by each team, but neither one was able to finish off their chances to take the lead. The game ended in a 1-1 draw. NW will travel to Aberdeen, S.D. to face Presentation College at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 9.
