The Raider women’s Soccer team traveled to Morningside on Tuesday for a GPAC showdown that resulted in a 0-0 tie after 110 minutes of action.
Although they did not light up the scoreboard, the defense held strong.
Junior goalkeeper Ariel Watts managed to notch eleven saves in a match that had the Raiders on the defensive for the majority of the time. In a lopsided shooting night, the Mustangs took 28 shots compared to only six from the Raiders.
“It definitely was not a lack of effort, we worked extremely hard,” said junior midfielder Missy Yorchak. Winning the 50/50 situations, being more disciplined in closing our defensive gaps, and being in position to make plays is something we need to work on.”
In a night void of offense, the Raiders were led in shots by junior midfielder Johannah Jensen with two attempts and one being on goal. The Raiders managed to shoot only three shots on goal the whole night.
“Our offense needs to improve with connecting on more passes,” said junior midfielder Jessica VanderBaan. Coach [Blake Wieking] liked our effort and how we fought through overtime but said that our technical skills need work.”
Also, the Raiders successfully defended the Mustang’s eight corner kicks en route to their fifth shutout of the season. The Raiders remain undefeated in GPAC play.
The Raiders, with a record of 5-2-2, return to action at 5 p.m. on Saturday for a special homecoming matchup in Orange City versus conference foe Midland.
